Break-even ROAS, explained with real numbers

Short answer

Break-even ROAS is the return on ad spend at which an order pays for its own ad and nothing more: 1 ÷ your margin before ads. If an order leaves you 46.6% of its value after product cost, shipping and payment fees, your break-even ROAS is 2.15. Ads below that lose money on every order they bring in, even if the ROAS sounds good.

ROAS is revenue, not profit

ROAS (return on ad spend) is the revenue your ads bring in divided by what they cost. Google shows it as a percentage (500%); most ecommerce tools show it as a multiple (5.0).1 A ROAS of 3.8 means $3.80 of sales for every $1 of ads, but those sales still have to pay for the product, shipping and fees. The ad platform doesn't know those costs. As one Shopify Community post puts it, “Meta does not know your product costs, shipping subsidies, discounts, payment fees, or refunds.”2

Worked example

A $60 order, $22 product cost, $8 shipping label, and payment fees of 2.9% + 30¢ ($2.04):

  • Margin before ads = $60 − $22 − $8 − $2.04 = $27.96 per order (46.6%)
  • Break-even ROAS = $60 ÷ $27.96 = 2.15
  • Most you can spend on ads per order (break-even CPA) = $27.96
ROASAd cost per orderProfit per order after ads
2$30.00−$2.04
3$20.00$7.96
3.8$15.79$12.17
5$12.00$15.96

At a ROAS of 3.8, this order still makes $12.17, before your plan, apps and any refunds. But a 3.8 ROAS only breaks even at a 26.3% margin before ads. A product that leaves you 25% after cost, shipping and fees loses money at the same 3.8 ROAS. That's how “all sales through Meta ads, but no profit” happens.3

Is a 2 ROAS profitable?

Only if your margin before ads is above 50%, because at 2.0 the ad costs half of the order. Break-even ROAS by margin:

Margin before adsBreak-even ROASDoes a 2.0 ROAS make money?
20%5.00No
30%3.33No
40%2.50No
50%2.00No
60%1.67Yes

For context, Triple Whale reports a median Meta ads ROAS of 1.88 across its own customers (August 2025 to July 2026).4 That's vendor data on its own users and it measures revenue, not profit, but it's a useful reference point: an order at a 1.88 ROAS only breaks even with a margin before ads above 53.2%.

Which margin goes in the formula?

Use your margin after product cost, shipping you pay, payment fees and refunds. Using product cost alone (gross margin) gives a break-even ROAS that's too low, so ads look profitable when they aren't. Fixed monthly costs like your plan and apps aren't per order; leave them out of break-even ROAS and cover them with the profit above it.

POAS: the same idea measured in profit

POAS (profit on ad spend) divides the profit your ad-driven orders earn by the ad spend. 1.0 is break-even; above 1.0 the ads made money.5 If your ROAS is 3 and your margin before ads is 40%, your POAS is 3 × 0.40 = 1.2.

Find your own number

Use the break-even ROAS calculator with your average order, product cost, shipping, fees and refund rate. Break-even ROAS differs by product, because margins do. The True Net Profit report works out break-even ad spend per order and per product from your actual orders.

Questions

What is break-even ROAS?

The return on ad spend at which ad-driven orders cover their own ad cost and nothing more. It equals 1 divided by your margin before ads.

How do I calculate break-even ROAS?

Work out what one order leaves you after product cost, shipping, payment fees and refunds, as a share of the order value. Divide 1 by that share. A 40% margin before ads means a break-even ROAS of 2.5.

Is a 2 ROAS good?

Only if your margin before ads is above 50%. Below that, a 2.0 ROAS loses money on each ad-driven order.

Why do I have a good ROAS but no profit?

Because ROAS counts revenue, not profit. Product costs, shipping, fees, refunds, discounts, apps and your plan come out of that revenue, and ad platforms don't see them.

What's the difference between ROAS and POAS?

ROAS divides revenue by ad spend. POAS divides the profit from those orders by ad spend, so 1.0 is break-even.
